Catalan Bay residents send petition to Chief Minister on Little Genoa development
|
A petition has been delivered to the Chief Minister (with a copy to the Deputy Chief Minister in his Departmental Ministerial capacity) with over 250 local signatures expressing concern at the non-provision at Catalan Bay village of the facilities of toilets, changing rooms, showers, storage, steps from road to beach, children’s playground, extensive restoration of palm trees and new promenade – "all as strictly provided for in the 2002 planning permission for Little Genoa development, but not complied with – with 14 more dwellings instead and minimal token community provision," says spokesman Paul de Beresford.
The petition reads as follows:
PETITION BY CATALAN BAY RESIDENTS TO GOVERNMENT ABOUT LITTLE GENOA DEVELOPMENT
We are concerned that the draft head lease and planning permission given in 2002 to Little Genoa Limited (RLS) to develop 12 houses and provide facilities for the villagers and beachgoers have not been complied with and that the amended head lease of 2008 increased the area for extra dwellings and commercial development at the expense of the public facilities and was so amended without any consultation or notice and certainly without agreement by the villagers or owners of the new houses at Little Genoa. The planning consent as given has been breached as follows:
1. The children’s playground behind the Village Inn has not been built and RLS want to build a block of flats there instead and simply put a couple of play items on the existing government-owned promenade instead.
2. The stores for use by villagers have not been constructed and portakabins remain on the promenade.
3. New steps beside the Caleta Hotel have not been completed and the concrete blocks forming the underside of the upper houses are dangerously loose and the steps are blocked by a gate at the road.
4. None of the removed palm trees or replacements was ever planted along the road or within the development.
5. Changing rooms, showers and toilets have not been provided on the promenade under the three houses nearest to the Village Inn, and RLS plan smaller ones behind the Inn.
6. RLS plan to build many small beach apartments of the Both Worlds type at promenade level (without car parking) and extending on to the promenade.
We ask Government to rescind the head lease and complete the development themselves as per the original plan and not grant any permission to the same developer to build anything further in Catalan Bay.
