Death of Joshua Gabay, a great Gibraltarian

Joshua Gabay, a gentleman of a politician, has died. He was 77.

He served in many posts, such as headmaster of Carmel College in England; was Governor of Oxford Academy, Connecticut USA; and Chairman of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust as well as a member of the House of Assembly with the GSLP, education and heritage being his briefs.

Joshua also had an MA (Oxon) in Modern Languages Diploma in Public Administration.

A statement from the GSLP says: "This week we in the GSLP bid our last farewell to a great Gibraltarian, Joshua Gabay. A person who impressed everyone who knew him by his intellectual ability, his command of the language and his unequalled integrity and honesty.

A man of great convictions who won the respect of and was much loved by the rank and file in our party.

Today we join his family and friends in mourning our loss.

Joshua was a first class parliamentarian and debater. He was a man of convictions which above all else were reflected in the defence of the Gibraltarian identity which marks us as a separate people and the rejection of any deal with Spain over our country which is one of the core values of our party.

His commitment, ability and contribution is also a reflection of how much is contributed to our society by the Jewish community in Gibraltar, which although small in numbers, makes up for it by the quality of the contribution their members make to all walks of life.

Gibraltar has lost one of its great sons, who will be missed by us but not forgotten."

Statement from the Liberal Party of Gibraltar: The Leader of the Liberal Party Dr Joseph Garcia has said that Joshua Gabay was a man of principle and of integrity and he will be sadly missed.

“Joshua was both a friend and a parliamentary colleague, a staunch Gibraltarian who always had the interests of Gibraltar close to his heart. He devoted a lifetime to his accomplishments in the field of education where he touched the lives of many pupils who still remember him fondly.

On behalf of the Liberal Party, I would like to express my most sincere condolences to his wife, his daughters and his family.”
