In and out of hotels
|
Has anything changed about hotels? Are they better off, the same - or what?
Sleeper occupancy keeps going up and down. Latest figures for 2008 put that at 48.7%, that's up on the previous year but down on figures from 2001 to 2005.
In fact, back in 1985, sleeper occupancy was higher, over 50%.
There is also another yardstick, room occupancy percentages. There is a similar pattern evolving in this respect - For 2008 it was 60.6% higher than the previous two years, but lower than the previous 5 years before that!
The situation is that room nights offered by hotels are far higher than room nights sold. Latest figures show 2,187 room nights offered and 1,326 sold.
Average length of stay is another Rock handicap - It has been around 3 days for some 20 years! This means that Gibraltar is not a truly tourist destination, but rather a place where people stay for just a few days.
