EU commissioner 'contradicts himself'
|
The suggestion by the European Commission that there should, in any way, be joint management or joint control of our waters is an absurd notion that would, in effect, surrender the sovereignty of our waters to Spain.
The PDP adds: Only recently Commissioner Dimas made the point that sovereignty claims should not be prosecuted through the tool of the Habitats directive. The fact that he now makes this proposal is in direct contradiction to his statement because it would allow Spain to have made a massive advance in its sovereignty claim to our waters.
In its obsession to ensure that friction between Member States is minimised the European Commission has already on a number of occasions shown that it is willing to disregard fundamental rights of the people of Gibraltar. This is yet another occasion.
If instead of making such loaded suggestions the Commission were to dedicate its efforts to persuading Spain to accept the situation prior to the designation by both Britain and Spain of part of our waters under the Habitats directive then this might be a more productive process.
The PDP say they are sure that all political parties will stand united in defence of the sovereignty of our waters. If this is the only contribution that the Commission can offer to this debate then it demonstrates that the litigation on the waters must be proceeded with to a conclusion.
