Don't use frontier as political weapon, Gibraltar union tells Spanish unions
|
The possibility of the frontier being blocked next week, as part of the Spanish union fight to get the salaries owed to their members by the municipality of La Linea, has led to the Gibraltar union Unite urging the La Linea unions not to block the frontier.
Unite says that it fully supports the Spanish unions' struggle in defence of their members' interests, "which they consider to be an injustice, as workers salaries are sacrosanct, and neither an employer nor a local government can withhold payment to its employees, this is totally unacceptable."
Having said that, "we consider that using the frontier for that purpose, is a negative move, and could have detrimental effect on workers employment that cross daily to earn a living."
Unite adds that it is totally against the use of the frontier as a political weapon, as this will not only create animosity between the two communities, but could place in jeopardy jobs in Gibraltar, for frontier workers.
They, therefore, call on the Spanish trade unions to desist and reconsider their possible action, for the reasons stated.
