Open snooker tournament gets going

Yesterday saw the start of the second round in this year’s St Bernard’s Club, “Famous Grouse Open snooker tournament.”

On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights, last week, the round one games all went ahead; as well as one of the second round contests.

On Tuesday night Steve West, of Team Queensway, played and beat Albert Tacon, of St Bernard’s club, in two straight sets. Steve was the player in form and showed his practice in each frame; taking the balls on offer, then going safe and leaving Albert nothing at all. Steve now plays Paul Heard next Tuesday.

Next up Ian McIntosh beat Michael Zammitt, also in two frames. Once again the familiarity with the cue and shot selection showed that one player was practicing more than the other. Ian now faces Adrian Wink on Tuesday.

The third game, featuring Ramu Daswani, of St Bernard’s club and Jonathan Collado, of the Cue Ball, was moved to the Friday.

In a game moved from Friday night Victor Crute, of Both Worlds, faced Alain Gatt, of the Astoria R&F Club. Alain and Victor both showed preparation and determination taking the first frame to 54 points to 51 in Alain’s favour when Victor got the pink and the lead. Then the bizarre stepped in!

Failing to pot the black, Victor appeared to leave Alain ‘jawed’ on the black by the middle pocket; only for the white ball to change its mind and drop into the pocket as the referee was marking up the score! The foul was called and Alain given the frame!

Alain then ‘ran away’ with the second frame to win the match two frames to nil and a game against Peter Buttigieg junior next Thursday.

On Thursday night Blythe Reeve, of St Bernards, started off against Paul Blood, also of St Bernards, as if he too was in a hurry and took the first frame in double quick time. Paul however had other ideas taking the second frame and the match to the decider.

This time Blythe took no risks at all and won the frame and match to move on to play Nicky Correa, next week, on Thursday. Fernando Monteverde, another of the ‘saints’ came up against Simon Blood, again another, in the following match and proved too much for the younger man, with Fernando winning through two frames to nil and now to face Eddie Newton next week!

In the third game on Thursday night Roy Smith, another of Both World’s players, came up against Albert Perez, of the Cue Ball. Albert had all the advantages of youth and practice; going on to win two frames to nil and faces Lawrence Sisarello in the next round.

In the opening game on Friday night Wesley Tacon, of St Bernard’s, took on another saint, Dave Lancaster. Wesley struggled in the first frame; with Dave always in charge. Eventually Wes caught up to pot the black and force a ‘re-spotted’ black. Some shots later Wes got the black and stole the frame. The third frame was the mirror image of the first with Wes ahead and Dave trailing to the end. A good two frame win for Wes who goes on to play Harry Ward next week.

Ramu Daswani couldn’t make the re-scheduled time on Friday and so Jonathan Collado got a walk-over.

Peter Bensadon, of St Bernards, seeded number 11, came instead and he and Jonathan played their second round match instead. Both players were prepared for this clash but one was in a hurry! Jonathan took his time and having twice given Peter a chance to take the first frame, Jonathan eventually potted the black and took the one nil lead. The second frame finally went the same way with Jonathan taking his time and Peter getting more and more determined to hurry up. Jonathan won by two frames to nil and moves in to the third round against Ernest Clinton.
