Imports from Spain DOWN

Imports from Spain have been going down in recent years, although Spain remains the second importer after the UK.

In 2001, Spanish imports stood at ?58 million, they went down to ?49 million the next year, and although they went up to ?57million in 2003, they were at a low ?45million last year.

It is the lowest figure for Spanish imports in the last 6 years.

This seems to be surprising. It could be that there are more people who buy in Spain, and thus do not come through the normal procedures, such as foodstuffs which do not draw import duty and do not have to be declared.

It could also be that the number of Rock residents who now live in Spain is higher than ever, which means that they do the bulk of their shopping in Spain.

Imports from the UK are also erratic. 2003 was a bad year at ?79 million, down from the previous year, but they went up last year to ?84 million.

The third main importer from EU countries is Holland - but far below the main two importers. They are followed by Denmark and Germany.

At the bottom of the imports league are countries like Luxembourg, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovak republic, at nil imports, while the Czech Republic and Malta are slightly up at around a million pounds each.

In general terms, Gibraltar's imports are at their lowest in 6 years - from a high of ?224 million in 1999 to a low ?143 million last year.
