Remembering in Tangier
|
After a Service of Remembrance at St Andrews Church in Tangier, Sergeant Andy Donaldson of the GSP laid a wreath on the grave of Sergeant Terence Henning, a member of the Gibraltar Security Police who was killed in action in 1943. In all, four members of the Security Police were killed in this incident but the others are buried elsewhere in Tangier.
‘I intend to discover the whereabouts of the other three graves,’ said Andy. ‘And I’d like to know a little more about the circumstances of their deaths. I’d always understood that they were killed by a postal bomb which went off in the military post office where they were working. However, I’ve been told a different version of the events whilst I’ve been here in Tangiers.’
At the same ceremony, wreaths were laid by the British Ambassador to Morocco, Mr Timothy Morris, the British Defence Attache, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Jammes and by Lieutenant Matt Sykes of the Gibraltar Squadron. The ship’s company of HMS SCIMITAR formed a Guard of Honour at the side of the graves of thirteen British and Commonwealth personnel who lost their lives during World War 2. By the side of these graves which are laid by the side of each other in a shady and tranquil cemetery, Last Post and Reveille were played by the bugler, Colour Sergeant ‘Coops’ Cooper of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment.
‘The Squadron has supported this Act of Remembrance for many years,’ said Lt Matt Sykes. ‘We have many links with Morocco and we enjoy supporting the community here.’
