New Governor, frigate and Tornados

When Sir Adrian Johns leaves Parliament toay, following the Swearing-In Ceremony, he will inspect a Guard of Honour from the Royal Gibraltar Regiment and the Royal Gibraltar Police. These will be formed on Main Street. He will then meet members of local Scout and Guide Groups, as well as St John Ambulance Gibraltar.

The public will be able to view Sir Adrian’s departure and the subsequent events from Main Street, outside Parliament. They will also have the opportunity to welcome Sir Adrian when he walks along Main Street to the Convent.

Prior to the Swearing-In Ceremony, local residents are likely to hear the 17 gun salute at 10 o’clock at the Tower, which will mark his arrival in Gibraltar. Some might also see the planned fly-past of RAF Tornados.

After carrying out her important role in the arrival of the new Governor, HMS Lancaster will remain in the Naval Base until Wednesday before setting off on a seven-month deployment to the Middle East.

The Duke-class frigate’s main role will be supporting international efforts to stop piracy off the coast of Somalia and to remain prepared to battle other illegal activities in the wider region of the Horn of Africa. She will take over operational duties from the Plymouth-based Type 22 frigate HMS Cumberland.

HMS Lancaster is familiar with the Middle East, having returned in February from a six-month deployment to the Northern Arabian Gulf where she played a key role in protecting Iraq’s oil platforms.

Also visiting Gibraltar are four Tornado GR4s of 14 Squadron, RAF Lossiemouth. Conducting operational training flights to and from Gibraltar, they will leave on Monday morning to coincide with the new Governor's arrival.
