The Armando LaGrande column

Friends and neighbours
Everyone is up in arms about the deplorable action being taken by the La Linea authorities on vehicular traffic which is destined for Gibraltar. There have been press releases from here, there and everywhere.

What about the Government of Gibraltar? They finally issue a brief statement and say: "The Government does not react to hostile or provocative statements from Sr Juarez and encourages others in Gibraltar to do likewise."

In other words, if they hit you on one cheek, offer the other...

It also refers to "the actions taken by the Policia Local in La Linea 'purportedly' on the instructions of the La Linea mayor.

What do they mean 'purportedly', as if there was any doubt that it was the mayor who issued the instructions, when there has been an official statement from the mayor saying what he was going to do! Doesn't the Gibraltar Government know?

What appeasement!

It is as if our Government thinks that those in Spain cannot try to do any damage to us and have been indoctrinated by the famous 'handshake' picture purporting to display an act of friendship...

Use of frontier as political tool

Once again those on the Spanish side - our friends and neighbours! - have resorted to drastic action affecting the frontier. It proves, once again, that activity linked to the frontier is used as a tool to do us damage.

It makes no difference whether the measures are imposed by the Spanish Government or by a next-door neighbour. It's what these Spanish authorities do against us that matters.

What is now happening in La Linea is that traffic on the way to Gibraltar, is being stopped and diverted into La Linea itself - as if they want them to do their shopping etc in La Linea but not Gibraltar.

What a carry on!
