The rally:
Re-affirmation of our rights

The SDGG Steering Committee confirms that it will organise its National Day political rally at 11am from Casemates Square.

They regret the Government has not replied to our formal application to hold the rally at Casemates "but we have already made arrangements to ensure it proceeds as successfully as it did last year."

The following is the SDGG statement in full:

The SDGG believe that the political rally is a necessary and intrinsic part of any National Day celebration any where in the world. Only by having our politicians confirming their commitment to the defence of our rights can the message be sent unequivocally for the whole world to hear.

In Gibraltar it is particularly important given the existence of the Spanish claim. We must emphasise that Gibraltar can only be decolonised by the application of the principle of self determination of its people.

The political rally is the re-affirmation of Gibraltar’s right to self-determination, of the right of the Gibraltarians to their land, homes and way of life. This is our determination and we must voice it loud and clear all united in our political rally on our National Day.

THE GIBRALTAR AWARD

Some years back the SDGG decided to honour Gibraltarians who had contributed towards the development of the Gibraltar Identity and introduced the Gibraltar Award as part of the National Day festivities. For two years running now, the Gibraltar Parliament has bestowed awards upon Gibraltarians on National Day. This was an initiative of the Gibraltar Government. The Steering Committee of the SDGG have decided to put on hold the Gibraltar Award so that there is no conflict, confusion or competition with the Government arrangements.

WINDOW/FAÇADE COMPETITION - “Our Land; Our Pride”

An innovation for this year’s festivities is the introduction of a window/facade competition for which there will be First Second and Third prizes. The theme for the competition is “Our Land; Our Pride”. There are no conditions for entry except that the displays must follow the theme and emphasise the celebration of our right to determine our future. Lighting displays are encouraged as are the use of our flags and our colours. A further Press Release will be issued soon detailing the basis of the competition. The SDGG will be manning a table at the Piazza this Saturday morning where details for the competition will be available.

RALLY ARRANGEMENTS

Although the rally will commence at 11am in order to allow people to attend the Piazza festivities later, we shall be providing music as from 10 in the morning for those that want to start early with their coffee and “churros” at the Square. At 11 all the elected members of our Parliament are invited to come up on the stage where an SDGG spokesman shall give a short address. A speaker representing each of the political parties present will also be invited to give a short address. A special invitation will be issued to the leader of the PDP who will also be invited to give a short address. In total the event should last no more than 30 minutes.

REGULAR MONTHLY MEETINGS

Following member’s requests, the Steering Committee is formulating a regular program of activities in consultation with previous active members. Over the course of the next few months we shall establish a calendar of regular events including monthly question and answer sessions with community leaders.
