Some are thinking of Christmas parties, others of new political parties...
|
by our Political correspondent Most people will be thinking about Christmas parties, but there are those who will be thinking about political parties. About new political parties.
New political parties have been in the air since the PANORAMA poll put the GSD on a decline; there has been change - and more is in the offing.
Lawyer Charles Gomez fired the first shot when he said he was forming a new party, the New Gibraltar Democracy, but the party has not been formally constituted. Will it stay where it is or will it take a step forward?
We all know what happened to Labour and the exit from the GSD of Keith Azopardi and Nick Cruz.
There were indications that both were thinking of forming a new party, and while nothing dramatic has happened in that front, it does not mean that nothing will develop.
SECRET MEETINGS
There have been secret meetings in the past and in the present.
Peter Montegriffo has been urged to take the plunge, but it is not uncharacteristic of him that he is still thinking about it.
Montegriffo is a political animal and it would be surprising if he threw the towel in forever.
He is looking for that opportune moment that would crown him with success. Rather than put in a fight, he is hoping that the red carpet will unfold in front of him.
There are those, however, who think he should come forward now, as there would appear to be an opening for a third party. In fact, if he came forward now it could have the effect of making Peter Caruana think whether or not to call it a day, as a ?split? of the votes could work against him. There are people who are ostensibly close to him who are privately questioning his future.
It could well be that he could stand again and win again. But after three terms, a feeling sets in that time may be up.
It has happened to all other chief ministers.
If Caruana were to provide an inkling that he was thinking about retiring, this would push the undecided forward into the political area.
While the thinking goes on in political circles, there are other names being mentioned, such as Marilou Guerrero of the GFSB.
