Alarm as caravan goes on tour of runway

by PANORAMA reporter
A caravan set alarm bells ringing on Saturday afternoon - when it entered Gibraltar, turned right at the security barrier and commenced a tour of the runway. Under an hour earlier, an RAF Hercules transport plane had been offloading what looked like ammunition.

It was 5.20pm when the MOD/GSP Landrover rushed to intercept the caravan, effectively a Tourist Camper Van.

The intruders were stopped for about 20 minutes while the GSP/MOD police searched the vehicle and its occupants. They were escorted off the runway by the Landrover.

All this happened in full view of bathers at Western Beach.

Under an hour earlier, the RAF Hercules had been unloading goods not far from the same spot. There were two forklifts, a lorry and the MOD fire brigade in attendance, which made some people suggest that the goods may have included ammunition.
