UK interest in Gibraltarian standing for EuroElections
|

Jonathan Stagnetto who is standing for election to the European Parliament as part of the Liberal Democrat list for the South West and Gibraltar region has outlined the problems that Gibraltar faces in Europe in an interview with BBC Radio 4.
There has been considerable interest in his candidature since this was announced given that he is the only Gibraltarian who has put his name forward to contest these elections.
Mr Stagnetto was asked by BBC Radio how his candidature came about. He explained that the matter had been discussed and agreed in principle some time ago with the region?s Liberal Democrat MEP Graham Watson who was very supportive of the idea. When the opportunity came up to have someone from Gibraltar in the line-up this was taken up immediately.
Jonathan Stagnetto told BBC Radio that his candidature was a reflection of the excellent relations between the Liberal Democrats and the Liberal Party of Gibraltar and he added that it represented a real commitment to Gibraltar on the part of Graham Watson and his team.
Mr Stagnetto was also questioned about a number of local issues including the economy, the finance centre, the constitution, the joint-sovereignty controversy and the problems with Spain.
