Union calls for Moroccans to have right to vote in European elections
|
The local branch of the union Unite is getting support from its UK headquarters for Moroccan residents to vote in European elections. The next European elections take place in June, when Gibraltar will again be voting as part of the South-west region of England.
In Britain, the National Secretary for Equalities has written to the returning Officer for the South-west region putting in their claim.
In a letter, Unite says it has a number of members who live and work in Gibraltar. "Some of our members are Moroccan workers, many of whom have lived in Gibraltar for over 30 to 40 years," says the letter.
It adds: We understand that as non EU nationals living in Gibraltar, even as long term residents, they still do not have the right to vote. Our union is asking you as the returning Officer for Poole and Dorset, under which Gibraltar is included for the European Elections, to let us know as soon as possible why Moroccans who have resided in Gibraltar for so many years are being denied the basic right of having a say in the democratic process and deciding by whom they will be governed.
