Workers from sub-contractors at waterport Terraces and elsewhere not getting what they should, says union

The TGWU Section of Unite has spoken about the continuing problems encountered by their members in the construction industry, more specifically on the Waterport Terraces Project.

They say: Last October the Unite Construction Committee was involved with our members in a week-long strike on the fundamental issue of non-payment of wages. Although we managed to resolve successfully the grievances of our members, and the monies due was recovered and paid to our members, the Union was nevertheless concerned with the system in place, and needed improvement as highlighted by us publicly and to the company involved.

Five months later and we are on a similar situation, union members from sub-contractors are not receiving their entitled remunerations.

On Friday and Monday the Unite Construction Committee has been fully engaged in finding a resolution to these grievances. "We will be meeting Brues Management, who is responsible for the project, on Thursday, where we expect a solution," they said.

And they add: "We would like more involvement of the Employment Service, as some of these companies are not adhering with the employment contracts, signed by the employee and employers and agreed by this government department."

On this job contract, for construction workers it is specified in the document that the terms and conditions are as per the CATA Agreement. This is not being respected especially by Spanish companies.

As an example, in the CATA accord it states that employees will be paid on a weekly basis, this is not done, they are paid monthly, and not always on time. The employment service, the same as the Union, should exercise more pressure on these companies, "so that they pay their employees on the date agreed, and not 2 or 3 months later, which is the problem some of our members are facing at the moment."
