World Down Syndrome Day

On March 21st, World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) will mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of Professor Jerome Lejeune's discovery of the extra copy of chromosome 21 which causes Down Syndrome.

The date was chosen to signify the uniqueness of Down syndrome in the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome and is used synonymously with Down syndrome.

The Down Syndrome Support Group of Gibraltar will be holding their third Buddy Walk, rain or shine, on Saturday 21 March 2009. The Buddy Walk is a short walk in which anyone can participate without special training.

It is a wonderful, heart-warming event that celebrates the many abilities and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome. The Buddy Walk will start off from Casemates Square at 12:30. The Boy Scouts Band will be leading off the walk. There will be Disney Characters and Face Painting. Registration will be available for school groups, individuals and families. T-Shirts will also be on sale, says Jane Payas, secretary.
