Over 400 questions from Opposition for Parliament's meeting which starts tomorrow

The Opposition has tabled a total of 404 questions for the Government to answer at the meeting of Parliament which starts tomorrow. This will be the first question-time of 2009. The Leader of the Opposition Joe Bossano has tabled a series of wide-ranging questions designed to monitor the state of Government finances and of the economy in general.

In addition to this, Mr Bossano will ask Government to say whether it has taken a decision now on replacing the final salary civil service pension by a money purchase scheme for new entrants, and if so as from what date. He will also want to know whether the Government has now consulted the trade unions with negotiating rights in the civil service on this matter. Also on civil service issues, Mr Bossano wants Government to say what public sector employees, who are not civil servants, are subject to general orders. He will also want Government to confirm that industrial employees in Government employment are now required to sign the Official Secrets Act and if so since when.

The Opposition Leader has also tabled a number of questions on Waterport Terraces. He will ask Government to state whether GRPI has taken any steps to satisfy itself that its contractor and subcontractors in Waterport Terraces have all their labour properly registered and complying with the social insurance and PAYE legal requirements. Mr Bossano will also press Government to say what further payments, if any, have been made to the contractor or other parties in respect of this development.

Mr Bossano has tabled a question which seeks confirmation from the Government that its estimate of Spanish frontier workers in January 2009 is almost 4000. He will also want Government to confirm whether it is the case that although EU frontier workers are required to register in their state of residence to obtain unemployment benefits, they can register in the state of their last employment for the purpose of seeking continued employment.

On other matters, Mr Bossano will ask what hedging arrangements have been made for the construction contracts designated in euros for the air terminal and the housing for rental, with what institutions and at what cost.

In relation to Community Projects, Mr Bossano wants Government to say how many persons joined the company in each financial year from 1996/1997 and how many have left the employment of the company. He will want to know in how many cases the employment was terminated by the company or by the employee and whether the person transferred to employment elsewhere within the Government sector.
