Survey Result Should Concern the Police and the GPA
|
Through the Looking Glass, by Leo Olivero The views expressed by the GPA Chairman on television where he came across as being generally happy and satisfied with the result of the survey appeared strange to me.
The survey it self was only representative of a small sample of the general public, although those who did take part clearly indicated areas of police-community relations and police performance that are without doubt concerning. The public also highlighted social problems like drug misuse, under age drinking and traffic as those social issues that continue to worry many people in the community.
It was also difficult to gauge accurately the thoughts of the public because of the manner some of the survey questions were posed, there was a set of main questions which were closed-ended questions where the only answer that was invited was a yes or a no, this really gave little or no scope for the respondents to express or expand their views in anyway. Although even with this, it was clear that from three similar questions posed regarding public confidence in the police, that there is still a fairly serious problem with the public/police confidence issue.
The other two questions posed on police-public relations I thought got a slightly better grading compared to last year, but there is still a good percentage of the community who still remain unimpressed with the relationship between the public and the police.
