Spain complains to Britain 14 times over the Eastside project
|
by our Political correspondent The Spanish Government has been complaining to the UK about the planned Eastside project since 1989 - and have done so on fourteen occasions.
And they are refusing to discuss the matter with the Gibraltar Government. This puts the 'new climate'in relations in a true perspective, and shows Madrid in its true colours.
The information has been made available to the Spanish newsagency Europa Press by a spokesman at the Spanish Foreign Ministry led by Miguel Angel Moratinos, who takes the view that the project would be a violation of Spanish sovereignty as the Eastside project would be in what Spain describes as waters under Spanish jurisdiction.
This is like going back to the bad old days of General Franco. It means that if you go swimming in Eastern Beach, Catalan Bay or Sandy Bay you are in Spanish waters, according to Madrid.
What is remarkable is that the so-called Tripartite Talks have been proceeding merrily as if nothing as serious as this was happening.
It is obvious that Spanish thinking on Gibraltar remains entrenched in the mind-set of the 1700s - as if the world had not moved on.
