Nuclear berth exercise

Elements of HQBF and other agencies will be taking part tomorrow in a routine exercise to test the MoD?s preparedness in the event of an incident at the nuclear berth.
As in previous years, this will include ?real time? scenarios which will take place on the South Mole and which may involve the sounding of the Evacuation Alarm. The exercise may also involve activity which the public may think is unusual. They should not be concerned: these exercises are conducted in order to ensure our operational effectiveness, said British Forces HQ.
'HIGHEST PRIORITY'
*The nuclear safety of naval reactors is given the highest priority with the prime contribution to their safety coming from engineered safeguards, good design, quality control in construction, training and competence of staff in operations and maintenance. Such measures ensure that the likelihood of a reactor accident occurring is extremely remote.
Nevertheless, it is MOD policy to have in place detailed reactor accident contingency plans that form an additional level of public protection for use in the extremely unlikely event that an accident should occur.
Gibraltar has two Operational Berths at which nuclear powered vessels are able to berth and for which a Nuclear Accident Response Organisation (NARO) is required.
