'The Triumphal Welcome'

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust will be hosting the unveiling by the mayor Solomon Levy of ?The Triumphal Welcome? a painting by Ambrose R. Avellano on 10th September at the Heritage Trust?s newly refurbished exhibition room, on the ground floor of the Main Guard building in John Mackintosh Square.

?The Triumphal Welcome? depicts the scene at John Mackintosh Square on Tuesday 24th September 1963, when Sir Joshua Hassan, then Chief Minister, and Peter Isola returned from addressing the United Nations Committee in New York. In a 40-minute speech Sir Joshua left the UN Committee in no doubt as to the feelings of the people of Gibraltar in their desire to remain British and their right to determine their own future.

Ambrose?s painting captures the jubilant welcome given to Sir Joshua and Mr Isola upon their return and the gratitude of the people to them for a job well done, says the heritage trust. The painting will be on display at the Main Guard for one day only, and can be viewed between 11am and 7pm.
