Police action needed to drive pickpockets away from Gibraltar

by PANORAMA reporter
Beware of pickpockets - they are still out and about. The other day a local woman reported to us that her purse had been stolen that day.

She said that two Rumanian females had been taken in for questioning, but the Police said no arrests had been made.

However the RGP confirmed that 3 reports had been received, two were local and one Spanish.

Pickpocketing has clearly been on the increase, but it must be a time-consuming task for the Police.

When they undertake a special exercise, as they did recently, a number of people end up being arrested. That is what victims want more Police action to drive the pickpockets out of our streets, shops etc.

Today, someone you know might be the victim; tomorrow it might be you.

Presumably if the Police carried out a sustained lookout for pickpockets, and the word got around, it is likely that pickpockets might decide to stay away from Gibraltar.

But some sustained action is required, before pickpocketing in Gibraltar becomes a norm - and it would then be more difficult to eradicate.

Gibraltar must be a rewarding place for the pickpockets, otherwise they wouldn't keep coming.

People here are too relaxed about guarding their belongings. Also, when a pickpocket draws the cash, he or she must find you get good returns in Gibraltar, where more people carry more money on them than in other places.

It all serves to attract the pickpockets to Gibraltar. But they must be taught a lesson, so that they stay away and leave our people in peace.
