Shock waves at Ocean Village as 800-berth marina on the move on the Spanish side

Shock waves have hit Ocean Village as news circulate about the building of a new yacht marina as near as the Alcaidesa, which will be promoted nationally and internationally.

For a multi-million pounds investment, as is Ocean Village, anything that could conceivably become a credible competitor and take business away is bound to cause a stir, especially when the project is far from being established.

Reports say that the project has got underway following an agreement between the Alcaidesa and the Ferrovial company.

The marina will be within the La Linea municipality, so La Linea will be able to boast of having a major marina.

The question that needs being asked is if an environmental impact study has been completed, because whenever Gibraltar plans anything the first thing that is thrown over by those on the other side is that

an environmental impact study is required. But will the Gibraltar Government lift a finger? The current agreement at Alcaidesa is for the construction of the facility, such as the dredging work, the building of the wharves, harbour and jetties, with general use buildings following on.

It is expected the first phase will be completed in 18 months.

Around 800 berths will be built, including dry marina docks "with a greater number ' of longer vessels being catered for than at other marinas in the area" said a spokesman.

There will be a huge shopping, leisure and recreational area as well as 1,000 parking spaces for cars.

Special facilities will be provided for the jetties and the berths.

The general manager there said: "It will act as a gateway to Europe thanks to its communications and proximity to Gibraltar."
