Pickpockets sent to prison
|
Four women visitors to Gibraltar have been sent to prison on pick-pocketing charges. It follows a police operation and it shows that the courts want to stamp out this trend.
In the past couple of weeks there has been a spate of thefts from handbags or from persons. When such thefts take place, the victims are totally unaware of what is happening. They only realise a pickpocket has been at work when they need to use their purse or wallet. Then, it may be too late.
In the knowledge that such thefts were taking place, the RGP decided to do something about it.They embarked on an operation codenamed ?TWIST?.
This operation involved uniform and plain-clothed police officers. To date, the operation has culminated in the arrest of four females.
They are:
? Parashkeva TOMOBA, a Bulgarian aged 21.
? Maria Eduarda RODRIGUES PEREIRA DIAS DE OLIVIERA, Portuguese aged 61.
? Liz Brillitte ESCANDON CELIS, Portuguese aged 27.
? and Victoria MU?OZ MARTIN, Spanish aged 18.
All were charged with counts of thefts from persons and/or premises in Main Street and have been sentenced to three weeks imprisonment each.
TOMOBA had already been remanded in custody on Thursday 24 July.
Photographs of the convicted persons have been released by the Police.
