What a spectacular show that was!

by CHLOE LODDO

Saturday evening saw one of the most successful Miss Gibraltar pageants to date held at the Alameda Open Air Theatre. Krystle Robba took home the title and crown of Miss Gibraltar, closely followed by runner-up Samantha Enriles and Kathryn Gon?alves who took home the title of 2nd Princess. The award for Best Interview went to Lianne Azzopardi, whilst Elaine Martinez won the award for Miss Photogenic and Natalie Bonz won the title of Miss Friendship, as voted for by the contestants themselves. Presented by director of the production Christian Santos and GBC's Davina Camilleri and produced by the Santos Production team, the show captured the colour, glamour and vibrancy of Las Vegas. The pageant displayed a great deal of professionalism, opening with a show-stopping number, which involved dancers, the Santos Productions Angel and excellent surprise circus performers who dazzled the audience with their tricks amidst a classy black and white set. This dazzling number served to introduce the seven contestants all competing for the coveted title of Miss Gibraltar. They each modelled bikinis with brightly coloured feathers attached to them, designed by Dorcas Hammond who designed all the costumes for the show, again capturing the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas and proceeded to introduce themselves to the judges and the audiences. Following the well-choreographed bikini wear parade, the contestants took part in a gangster number, inspired by the gambling in Las Vegas casinos, which were then followed by their interviews and surprise questions. The highlight once again was the evening wear parade in which they were accompanied by the angelic dancers from Danza Academy. All the contestants looked stunning in their gowns, sporting some of the finest gowns to have graced the Miss Gibraltar stage for some time. Entertainment was provided by local talent as well as by two Spanish circus performers. The audience were really in for a treat as in the first half of the show the singers and dancers performed acts seen in the Las Vegas strip. Michelle Daniels sung 'It's All Coming Back to Me Now' by Celine Dion, Robert Perez sung 'Suspicious Minds' by Elvis Presley and Star Search winner Jesse McLaren performed 'A Hard Day's Night' accompanying himself with his guitar. The cast o1 singers came together to sing ?We Will Rock You' by Queen accompanied by dancers from Danza Academy who then ended the set with a great Riverdance piece. The audience were not left wanting as the entertainment in the second half proved. In a celebration of the Rat Pack era which is still very much alive today, the Gibraltar Academy of Dance were combined perfectly with the vocal talents of Sueanne Avellano, Felicity Sarde?a, Jeremy Perez. Christian Fa and Andrea Martin as well as with the vocalists from the first half. Songs such as 'In the Mood", "Fever", 'Don't rain on my parade' were favourites from a glamorous and colourful era. When the time came to crown the new Miss Gibraltar tension hung like fog in the air and the theatre went completely silent as they waited for Christian to make the announcement. Krystle Robba"s family and supporters went wild when it was announced she had won whilst the audience applauded a most deserving winner. A big congratulations to all who took part in putting such a great show together, and hopefully Santos Productions will continue to produce this major event on our social calendar in the years to come. The show was also televised live by GBC.
