Gibraltar soldiers race to success

Two of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment?s TA soldiers raced their way to success in last week?s Army Athletics championships at Tidworth
Private Aaron Bagu came third in the 800 metres but, as he was only 17 years-old he was awarded the Junior Army Championship. The race was won by Cpl Maosa Audu of the Royal Logistic Corps, a member of the British 4 x 400 metre team which won a bronze medal in Athens. Cpl Audu will also represent GB in this year?s Beijing Olympics ? a measure of the high standard of this year?s Army event.
?Aaron did exceptionally well in a very talented field,? said team manager Warrant Officer Class 2 Steve Chappell of the Army Physical Training Corps. ?He will have gained enormous experience from this race.?
In the 1500m, Private Richard Blagg (19) finished 4th but, again, as the best-placed teenager, he won the Junior Army Championship.
?Richard perhaps chose the wrong tactics for the race and I know that he is slightly disappointed with the result,? said WO2 Chappell. ?But he has learned so much from this race.?
Both Aaron and Richard were also selected to run in the Infantry?s 4 x 400m relay team.
As a champion decathlete himself, WO2 Chappell competed in several events, including the pole vault in which he came third, scoring valuable points for the Army Physical Training Corps. ?I was happy with my performance but there is still room for improvement,? added Steve.
