My appointment is typical of Gibraltar, says Mayor designate Momy Levy

Extract from PANORAMA interview by Brian McCann
You are about to be appointed the first non-parliamentary mayor of Gibraltar. Did that come as a complete surprise to you?

Completely. I did not have the faintest idea; it had never crossed my mind.

How were you informed of the decision?

I was told at two days? notice that the chief minister wanted to see me at 12.30 last Friday, and my reaction was ?What the hell have I done wrong?? because he had never called me before to his office. When he told me the news I was mute - for once in my life. Dumbstruck!

Did you need much persuading?

No; I accepted straight away. It?s a very great honour. I?m the first non-political mayor, and now in the family we have two firsts: my late uncle Sir Joshua Hassan was the first mayor of Gibraltar and now I?m the first non-political mayor. Not that I could begin to compare myself with him, but we are keeping the tradition up.
