Parliamentarians converge on the Rock

Some 46 parliamentarians from 15 Commonwealth countries will be attending next week?s Commonwealth Parliamentary Association British Islands and Mediterranean Region Annual Conference which is this year being hosted by the Gibraltar Branch of the CPA.
The Secretary General of the CPA Dr William Shija will also be attending. The Conference runs from 11th to 15th May.
Gibraltar?s delegation to the Conference is led by Ernest Britto, MP, Minister for the Environment and Tourism and consists of James Netto MP, Minister for Family, Youth and Community Affairs (a former Minister for the Environment) and Opposition Members Fabian Picardo MP and Dr Joseph Garcia MP, spokespersons, inter alia, for the environment and tourism respectively. The delegation secretary is Melvyn Farrell.
The conference theme is ?The Impact of Climate Change on the Environment? with special reference to the challenges faced by small countries and territories.
The conference takes place at the O?Callaghan Eliott Hotel. Parliamentarians will be welcomed to the conference by the President of the Gibraltar Branch of the CPA, Haresh K Budhrani QC and this will be followed by the Official Opening by the Minister for the Environment and Tourism.
The conference takes the form of four plenary sessions and six workshops. The plenaries will be addressed by Gibraltar speakers who will be making presentations on the following topics: Climate Change and Energy; Waste Management; Eco-Tourism; Biodiversity Conservation. These topics will include a brief on Gibraltar?s approach to dealing with the effects of climate change.
The six workshops will be exploring and discussing what strategies and options can be pursued by small territories in relation to the main topics.
The Annual General Meeting of the BIMR will be held during the Conference.
The conference comes to an end on 15th May with the final plenary session which includes reports from workshops and summing up. This will be chaired by the President of the CPA Gibraltar Branch who will also declare the conference closed.
