The Black Duke arrives today
|
Arriving in Gibraltar today is HMS Monmouth, a Type 23 frigate. Monmouth, or ?the Black Duke? as she is known, is here to act as the platform for the final phase of the Navy?s Principal Warfare Officers? Course.
After a weekend in the Naval Base, Monmouth will sail into the Mediterranean on Monday for five days of training and practice firing of the ship?s 114mm gun. After returning for another weekend in Gibraltar, Monmouth will then leave the Naval Base on Monday 5 May for her return to her home port of Plymouth.
Last year, HMS Monmouth completed a global nine month deployment, visiting 28 ports in 19 countries, aiming to display the UK?s continuing commitment to global security. HMS Monmouth worked closely with a host of agencies in conducting her mission, including participation in four ?live? operations.
Powerful and versatile, the Type 23 frigate is the mainstay of the modern surface fleet. The 13 Type 23 frigates form 50% of the frigate/destroyer force in the Royal Navy. Originally designed for the principal task of anti-submarine warfare, they have evolved into multi-purpose ships with the capability to operate anywhere in the world.
