Non-arrival of air mail from UK on regular basis provokes walkout at post office, says union
|
The Union members at the post office have staged a walkout to protest at the situation that is developing. The non-arrival of Royal mail from UK on a regular basis is the cause of the ongoing problem.
At the moment, Easyjet who took over from GB Airways (who used to be a carrier of mail) does not bring any mail whatsoever. The other airlines bring mail at irregular intervals.
As such when mail accumulates in Gatwick and this is despatched to Gibraltar on a specific day with a large backlog, management wants to sort and deliver this enormous amount of mail on the next day model, with the current staff this is impossible, and a dispute develops on the interpretation of the Post Office agreement.
For that matter, says the union, unless management employs more supply staff for this purpose, or government seeks an agreement with an airline, the problems at the Post Office will not disappear.
