Gibraltar Liberals in Barcelona conference

Executive Member Neil Costa will be representing the Liberal Party at a political conference in Barcelona this month on the subject of "Re-launching a strategic partnership: EU and Northern Africa".

The three day event will be covering such themes as how the EU deals with illegal immigration, strengthening the political and economic partnership with Africa and the improvement of the standard of living in Africa.

The theme of the conference is very relevant to Gibraltar given our proximity to North Africa and will allow Mr Costa to put forward ideas from the perspective of a small territory near the region under discussion. Keynote speakers are expected both from the European Union and from North Africa.

The conference is organised jointly by the Liberal Youth Movement of the European Union (LYMEC) and the Joventut Nacionalista de Catalunya. It will be followed by a further three day event which will encompass a meeting of the Executive Committee and the Congress of LYMEC. LYMEC is the youth organisation of the European Liberal Democrats and it has 210,000 members in 59 organisations spread across 37 countries.

"The Congress and Executive, in which Gibraltar's Liberals are represented with our own vote and in our own right, will debate a number of resolutions on a wide range of subjects. This will include topical matters like the Olympic Games in China, the Western Sahara and European coordination in the Iraqui refugee crisis. Other matters up for discussion include the prevention of teenage suicides, obesity and youth employment," said Mr Costa.
