Airfield car crash could have been worse

The dramatic car crash in the middle of the runway road could have been worse. Four people, including two police officers, were sent to hospital but only with minor cuts and bruises.
The flight coming in had to be put on what is called a 'holding circuit', meaning that it kept flying until the runway had been cleared which was not until 8.45pm.
The police had to close the area for about an hour while investigations took place.
It all happened as a police van was travelling on the Third Lane, about half-way into the runway road.
Police said that a car coming from the frontier travelling south started to overtake, encrouching onto the Third Lane, which resulted in a head-on collision with the police van.
A motorcycle behind the van collided into the rear of the van and a van travelling behind the motorcycle collided against the motorcycle and van.
This traffic accident confirms the danger inherent in having a Third Lane normally as a result of border delays. There is a crying need for improved traffic across the runway such as having a safer, alternative route which should not wait for any airport deal.
Furthermore, as people have been saying, the day there are more aircraft flying into Gibraltar, if a deal is struck, the greater the safety risk factor.
What helps make matters worse are those never-ending delays at the frontier, which can lead to traffic chaos.
