Unveiling of Nelson Statue

On Friday, as part of Gibraltar's contribution to the Trafalgar 200 celebrations, the chief minister of Gibraltar, Peter Caruana, unveiled a life-size statue of Admiral Nelson.

The statue, which stands outside the Trafalgar Cemetery has been cast in bronze by the well-known sculptor John Doubleday, and contains copper taken from HMS Victory.

Peter Caruana told the audience, which included the First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Sir Alan West, of the close links between Gibraltar and Britain, pointing out that had the Battle of Trafalgar been lost, Gibraltar would very likely have never remained British.

John Doubleday has waived his fees for creating the sculpture donating the proceeds to charities in Gibraltar and abroad.
