?4 million of drugs found in secret compartment in jetty.

Drugs worth ?4 million have been found by Gibraltar Customs in a secret compartment in a jetty at the port. Seven men, aged between 30 and 50, have been arrested and are helping Customs with their enquiries.

In the Customs operation, assisted by the RGP, 53 bales of cannabis resin were seized on Wednesday afternoon - with a major search of the area continuing until the small hours of yesterday morning.

The North Mole was cordoned off and a search of vehicles and buildings took place. Seven bales, each weighing about 30 kilos, were discovered in a foreign registered van. A further 46 bales were found hidden in what Customs describe as "an underground cavity in one of the jetties." The jetty is in the restricted area of the port.

A vessel and van have been seized, while police scene-of-crime officers were called in to gather forensic evidence. In all, over 40 law enforcement officers were taking part in the operation.

Customs sources said the drugs were from Morocco.

Yesterday evening, sources said that nothing further had been found in what is an ongoing operation.
