PROTESTS!

Two demonstrations are being held in La Linea this week which are directly linked to Gibraltar.

The first is on Thursday. It is to do with the environment.

A leaflet issued about it has an illustration of the New Flame right on the centre of the bay, with the message: Never again!

This protest is being organised by ecology groups such as Agaden and Verdemar.

The other demonstration is on Friday, and it is to do with the claim of Spanish workers associations' who want Spanish workers in Gibraltar to have equal rights on pensions and social benefits to Spanish workers in Spain.

This demonstration is supported by the Spanish workers associations, ASCTEG and CITIPEG, plus the UGT and CCOO unions.

They make it clear in a leaflet that what they seek are benefits "the same" as those applying to workers in Spain.

The leaflet makes the point that "over 18,000 persons in La Linea, as well as the commercial sector, depend on Gibraltar "thanks to the Pounds that we bring to La Linea."

"Everyone in La Linea with their workers in Gibraltar," says the leaflet.

This demonstration will end on the Spanish side of the frontier, at the place where the symbol of a Spanish worker and bicycle stands. A statement will be read out.

It is interesting that they think that over 18,000 people in La Linea depend on Gibraltar. There are, officially, close to 4,000 workers who are officially employed in Gibraltar, plus another couple of thousands who make a living out of Gibraltar. As they say, over 18,000 depend on the Rock for a livelihood.

If they were not deriving an income from Gibraltar, they would have no option but to join the long list of unemployed in La Linea.

The long-held Gibraltar view is that workers in Gibraltar of any nationality will receive the benefits that apply in Gibraltar.
