Air-to-air combat in Gibraltar area

Five Hawk aircraft of 19 Squadron, normally based at RAF Valley in North Wales arrive in RAF Gibraltar this week and will stay for two weeks.

The purpose of the visit is to practise the pilots in the skills of air-to-air combat in the training areas over the Mediterranean Sea.

Each day of the two weeks the five aircraft will take off together at 0900 hrs, 1200 hrs and 1500 hrs on sorties that will each last for about one hour. "Inevitably this will cause disruption to traffic on Winston Churchill Avenue: we apologise for any such disturbance and will do everything possible to minimize the effects on traffic," said an MOD spokesman.

?19 Squadron came out here to train last year to escape from the poor weather in UK, ?said Flight Lieutenant Ade Lutman, Officer Commanding Operations at RAF Gibraltar. ?The Squadron was so impressed with the support they received from Gibraltar that they immediately asked if they could repeat the exercise.?
