The duke of Edinburgh's award: Silver adventurous journey training

The weekend, 12th to 14th October, sees a group of 35 participants, currently attempting the SILVER AWARD level, travel to Spain to carry out the first of their practices for the Adventurous Journey Section of their programmes.

The participants will be travelling to the "PARQUE NATURAL SIERRA DE GRAZALEMA" in the area of Cortes de la Frontera. Activities will include team building exercises, camp craft and map reading with some hiking thrown in for good measure.

The weekend is the first chance the participants shall have to get back ?into the groove? since having completed their Bronze earlier this year. The main aim this weekend is to undertake a series of refresher sessions covering all the various skills learned during their Bronze training. However, having ?upgraded? to Silver now means that the terrain is much more demanding than that which they have previously encountered. Therefore the training will focus much more on improving map reading skills as well as building up their fitness levels.

The participants, whose ages range from 15 to 16 will be self sufficient during the venture carrying all their equipment and food requirements.

The youngsters will be supervised by experienced leaders throughout the trip.
