Green policies and the development and construction sector

In line with the Government?s Green Business Programme, the Ministry for the Environment held a seminar yesterday, tackling the Environmental Management and Performance issues associated with the development and construction sector.

The growth in construction and development is one of the more complex challenges facing sustainability worldwide and Gibraltar is no exception. Environmental legislation in this field is quickly gaining momentum via EU directives and there are now a number of directives that the Government is in the process of implementing.

A Government press release adds: Part of the ethos behind the green business programme is that of providing sound practical and technical advice in all aspects of the environment, so as to improve not only corporate practices, but also our quality of life by encouraging sustainable development.

The seminar therefore addressed numerous issues associated with sustainable construction such as energy and natural resource consumption, minimising pollution and the adoption of more robust onsite construction and environment management plans. Considerable emphasis was placed on the new development plan in view that it contains an array of policies tackling key sustainability issues such as building design and energy efficiency.

The seminar brought together planners, investors, designers, contractors, material suppliers and other professionals associated with the construction sector in an attempt to highlight Government?s vision of a low carbon economy.

There was a short address by the Environment Minister, Jaime Netto followed by a presentation by a UK consultant.
