UK and Spain to talk about Gibraltar today
|
The new UK foreign secretary David Miliband and the Spanish foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos will talk about Gibraltar today. The meeting is being held at the Spanish foreign ministry. Spanish sources said that Mr Miliband is on a tour of southern Europe.
The ministers will centre on matters related to the next round of the tripartite forum which Sr Moratinos would like to see discuss communications between the ports of Algeciras and Gibraltar.
The question of the two ports has gained topicality following the collision with the New Flame cargo vessel which remains half-sunk off Europa Point.
There are those in Spain who keep blaming the New Flame for every streak of fuel oil which is seen anywhere in the bay, while the mayor of La Linea has been critical of the Gibraltar government. The mayor of Algeciras has also joined the bandwagon.
The possibility of a trilateral meeting before the Gibraltar general election will no doubt be discussed, as there might be pros and cons given the nearness of the election.
The two ministers will also discuss matters of a European nature and other issues affecting the two countries.
Mr Miliband will also take part in a working breakfast organised by the British embassy and the Spanish Real Instituto Elcano, where the topic will be an efficient Europe in the world.
This will take place in the Ritz hotel. Spanish deputy foreign minister Barnardino Leon will present the act together with the British ambassador Denise Holt and the president of the institute Gustavo Suarez Pertierra.
