Tripartite talks inconclusive

Talks held in Majorca today between Britain, Spain and Gibraltar proved inconclusive, with no agreements reached on any of the issues under discussion.
This is the third round of talks under the tripartite forum. Dominick Chilcott headed the UK delegation; Jose Pons the Spanish delegation, and Peter Caruana the Gibraltar delegation.
A statement issued at the end of the talks spoke of the 'cordial climate' under which the talks were held, but little more in terms of definitive agreements.
There had been 'significant progress' on the use of the airport by Spain, but not enough to achieve a breaktghrough.
Differences were reported on the qiestion of updating pensions for former Spanish workers in Gibraltar, while the issue of telecommunications made advances but not enough, after a process which was initiated in February this year.
With Spain asking for assurances on nuclear submarines, the UK delegate Mr Chilcott said he wanted to make it clear that Britain had never said that she would stop repairs of submarines in Gibraltar. (11-10-2005)
