Twelve districts in power failure

At about 8pm last Wednesday the electricity supply system suffered a major disturbance causing a large voltage dip which was noticeable throughout the network.

A total of 12 districts had the supply interrupted for approximately 15 minutes with the exeption of Bayside/Devil's Tower Road/British Lines area district which was without power for 1 hour 12 minutes after a secondary problem was developed at Orange Bastion Distribution Centre and the Harbour Views/Westview Park/Safeways district which was off for 1 hour 29 minutes since this circuit was directly connected to the cause of the fault.

The cause of the fault was a major flashover in an 11,000 volts switchgear panel within the Europort substation. This flashover resulted in the substation room becoming choked with smoke and becoming inpenetrable without the aid of breathing aparatus, said the Gibraltar Electricity Authority.
