Nightlife in Gibraltar is dead
|
By Chloe Loddo There is a certain routine, a certain balance in students from 15-18 years old living in Gibraltar.
After working and going to school all week, you can be certain that Friday night in Casemates will be buzzing with students ready for a night on the town. It is only after you have been away from Gibraltar and partied in other places that you are fully aware of Gib's very limited nightlife.
University students who come back to Gib after their first year abroad come back not used to routine. University life varies from day to day and students realise their own freedom along with the opportunity to go out any night of the week as every night is a student night culminating on Saturday night. Apart from having no night clubs, buzzing nights out are limited to only once or maybe twice a week.
It is not that students especially GCSE and A Level students should be going out every night, it is that Gibraltar should see a development of proper nightclubs (not just for students to enjoy) rather than a few bars and more student nights throughout the week. Saturday night is a major night out pretty much all pver the world, not so in Gib. Instead those who love a good night out go over into SpainG/Vhen asking a number of students and non-students why this was, they said that a Friday night in Gib was to socialise and see everyone in all the bars and Saturday is a night for clubbing.Qtjs actually amazing how Casemates is so quiet on a Saturday night. Why is this? It is because Gibraltar has no nightclubs and therefore no proper nightlife. (There is such a student buzz at universities, particularly on the club scene but here because Gib is so limited most students either prefer to stay home or have house parties. It is surprising that nobody has thought to find a spacious venue to start a nightclub with big dancefloors and involved DJs. Most nightclubs tend to have a number of different rooms, each playing different types of music so that there is something for everyone. There are even themed rooms and chilled out rooms with very comfortable sofas and even beds!
Ultimately students hold Casemates close to their hearts, but it is becoming such a bore week after week, the same old routine. Maybe it is time to pay attention to the nightlife in Gibraltar as there many people not just students interested in seeing this developed. They should not have to go to Spain to experience a good night out if there is a buzzing night scene here.
