100 years of scouting

The 28th July is the 25th anniversary of a historic performance at the Royal Tournament at Earl?s Court, London, when the Corps of Drums of the 1st/4th Scouts (Marquis of Milford Haven?s Own) became the first Gibraltarian marching band to perform at that venue.

This year sees the 100th anniversary of world Scouting while 2008 is the centenary of Scouting in Gibraltar, and of the 1st Gibraltar, one of the two groups that, together with the 4th, went on the become the 1st/4th.

For many years the 4th, and later the 1st/4th, boasted a number of bands, and corps of drums. In the earlier part of the century, the 4th Group?s Band was extremely successful, and during the 1970s and early 80s, during closed fronrier days, the Corps of Drums was particularly prominent, giving high quality performances in venues around Gibraltar, and also in Morocco and the UK.

Now members of the ?old guard? are getting together to recreate something of what the Corps of Drums used to be, in celebration of 100 years of the Group. The intention is to get together, train and to perform in public once again in 2008.

A lot of work has to be done, and the support of old members, the public and others will be sought.

There will be an initial meeting of old Band and Corps of Drums members ? from the whole history of the band, next Thursday 2nd August at 8pm at the Police Club. At this meeting plans will be made for acquiring instruments and uniforms, practices and possible performances next year. Any one who was involved in the Band at any time during its history is welcome to attend.
