Sheffield University withdraws -
Search is on for new university partner by GHA

Representatives from Kingston University, London South Bank University and Southampton University are currently in Gibraltar visiting the Gibraltar Health Authority as part of the process to select a successor to Sheffield University as the Academic Partner for the GHA?s Nursing Educational Programme.

Some time ago Sheffield University indicated that it would be withdrawing from the work of International Co-operation with entities outside the UK because of a change of policy in its Nursing School.

The three universities visiting Gibraltar are those short-listed from the list of universities who showed interest in response to the tender published by GHA. A series of intensive meetings and presentations are taking place as part of the very busy programme prepared for the selection process.

The delegation from Kingston University is being led by Dr Val Collington, Associate Dean (International and Enterprise) and Head of School of Midwifery. Other members include Dr Linda Burke, Associate Dean (Practice Education) and Head of Primary Care & Long Term Conditions, Professor Sean Hilton, Vice-Principal (Learning & Teaching), St George?s University of London, Dr Julia Gale, Head of Mental Health & Learning Disability Nursing, Mr Malcolm Finn, International Link, South East coast Ambulance Service and Ms Amanda Ashley, Faculty Administrative Manager.

The London South Bank University Team consists of Professor David Sines, the Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Care and Debbie Harries the Head of Adult Nursing.

Southampton University are represented by Professor Dame Jill Macleod Clark, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Health & Biological Sciences and Head of the School of Nursing & Midwifery, as leader, Dr Sue Colley, Director of Professional & External Liaison, Dr Chris Barratt, Director of Professional Development and Mr Brian Webster, Associate Director of Learning, Teaching and Quality Enhancement.

?I am really impressed with the quality of the proposals and the calibre of the Universities who are short listed?, said E Britto, Minister for Health.

The level of preparation and research in the Gibraltar Health Service is particularly satisfying? added Dr D McCutcheon, Chief Executive.

?We are truly privileged to have Universities with such reputation interested in developing Gibraltar?s nursing? said Dr Karen Norman, Director of Nursing and Patient Services.

Although the selection process is currently taking place as part of GHA?s strategic planning, the full impact of the new partnership will not be apparent until the completion of the relationship with Sheffield University in September 2009.
