New ambulance lane affects traffic at St Bernard's Hospital

New traffic arrangements have come into force for St Bernard?s hospital, given that the ambulance service now operates from there and a faster exit is required.

The new arrangements are along New Harbours Road.

As part of the new Ambulance Service the Emergency 'ambulances will now be exiting the hospital southbound along the New Harbours Road ambulance lane, says the health authority. This will allow ambulances a faster exit in response to emergency call-outs.

All vehicles travelling along New Harbours Road should stay on the right hand lane and give priority to oncoming ambulances, says the GHA.

And add: All vehicular traffic will now have to access the hospital main entrance via the furthest ramp entrance and exit down the ramp towards the main roundabout.

A provisional parking area has been demarcated outside the hospital for outpatient use only and permits can be requested from the main reception. Certain conditions and time limits have been introduced to maximise the use of the limited parking space available.

The general public is therefore requested to be aware of the new signs and traffic arrangements when travelling along New Harbours Road or accessing St. Bernard?s Hospital.

*All this means that an essential service has suffered change without all the pros and cons being properly considered in the first place. The ambulance service used to operate from Coaling Island.
