Soldiers go for GCSE
|
Thirty seven soldiers of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment recently gained English and Maths qualifications under a Basic Skills programme conducted by the Services education centre.
The soldiers left school without having passed these subjects at GCSE and realised how this could set them back in the Army. Now they can boast of well earned qualifications that are recognised outside the service.
The programme began with an assessment to determine the soldiers levels of literacy and numeracy. There followed a tuition phase which taught basic mathematics and literacy. The programme ended with a final examination earning them a Level 1 in Adult Literacy and Numeracy qualification awarded by the Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examination Board (OCR).
"These exams are an example of how a soldier can actively gain qualifications whilst serving in the Regiment, limited only by their eagerness and determination to learn. Every soldier is offered ?175 a year and ?6000 in a lump sum to further their education while in the Regiment. A prime example of the RG?s education system in action is the new Regimental Sergeant Major who last year completed a Master?s Degree," said a spokesman.
