Gibraltar residents fear robberies in neighbourhood
|
The Spanish civil guards say that they have smashed a gang of thieves who had been operating mainly in the Campo area and also further up the Costa del Sol. It is said they had perpetrated 50 robberies in homes in the area.
Code named 'Operacion Ave', six members of the gang - Albanians - have been arrested.
It is said they operated in Sotogrande, Los Barrios and in the Costa.
The 'guardia civil' said that they had recovered valuable objects including jewellery.
The police operation started at the beginning of the year when a number of robberies were detected mainly in Sotogrande and Los Barrios.
As many as 22 robbeies are reported in Los Barrios and another 30 in Sotogrande plus a couple in Marbella, all being related to the gang.
The 'guardia civil'say they established their methods of operation and that they lived in Estepona and Mijas.
Spanish authorities say that those arrested had false passports. Two of them were detained just before leaving for Italy with large sums of money.
Members of the gang first kept watch on the owners of the houses to establish their habits. They acted, with special tools, when the owners were inside their houses. Their favourite time for action was between midnight and 6am. They would put everything stolen in haver-sacks and then escaped into the night.
