The government that destroyed the Rosia Tanks and abandoned the World Heritage bid now wants to be taken seriously on heritage, says the PDP
|
The Progressive Democratic Party says it welcomes the good work and effort that has gone into the refurbishment of the Tower of Homage.
Any project that restores and protects any of Gibraltar?s many and varied heritage sites deserves unreserved support, both from the general public, interested parties and of course, the Government.
They add: However it is somewhat ironic that the Minister urged Gibraltarians to visit this historical site and not take it for granted. This is the Government that was instrumental, just over a year ago, in the total destruction of another great and unique historical site namely the Rosia Tanks. Equally this is the Government who ditched many years of hard work by heritage professionals and unceremoniously abandoned Gibraltar?s World Heritage Bid last year.
A responsible government that was truly concerned in preserving our heritage but believed that in the wider social interest, the destruction of an important site needed to be proceeded with would have at least commissioned a full architectural and archaeological survey of the Rosia Tanks before demolition commenced. "It would have seriously considered the pleas from heritage lobbies locally and from overseas. A government truly concerned with the preservation of our heritage would have found a way to re-site this housing project," the PDP add.
Indeed heritage should not be taken for granted. Nor should the destruction of our heritage assets by those in Government be forgotten. If the Government wants to be taken seriously it needs to be much more consistent, serious and sensitive about its approach and not preside over a chaotic free for all in the planning of our buildings as is seemingly the case of late, says a Press release.
