The Smart Campaign To Reduce Skin Cancer

Skin Cancer is a common and serious illness in Gibraltar. Since 1998 to 2004, s many as 333 skin cancer incidences were registered.

Knowing that prevention is always better than cure, the GHA in collaboration with others has embarked on the SMART Campaign 2007.

"Our aim is to increase children?s awareness regarding the damage that sun exposure causes to the skin and to change certain behaviours regarding exposure to the sun," said a spokesperson.

The SMART Campaign 2007 is a Primary Care Centre initiative, with the collaboration of the Department of Education and the Gibraltar Society for Cancer Relief. The GHA?s team of Visiting Dermatology Consultants from the Leicester Royal Infirmary strongly support the campaign.

The Campaign involves pupils from our Middle Schools. They were invited to create posters, which raises awareness of the inherent dangers of sun exposure to the skin.

Year 4 pupils from the following Middle Schools have participated: Bishop Fitzgerald Middle School, St Joseph?s Middle School, Sacred Heart Middle School, Loreto Convent School.

These posters will be exhibited at the Fine Arts Gallery, Upper Casemates Square to Friday from 11am to 1pm and from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.

The children?s posters have been judged and prizes will be awarded during a ceremony, which will be held on Friday 27th April.

Sun awareness requires continuous education and our group will be working on a variety of yearly campaigns to achieve our goal of significantly reducing the incidence of skin cancer in Gibraltar. The SMART Campaign 2007 is sponsored by The Bonita Trust
